Vishal obtained his Master’s in biochemistry from M.S. University of Baroda, India. His interests in mitochondrial biology led him to Dr. Miriam L. Greenberg’s lab at Wayne State University, where he studied the interrelationship between cardiolipin biosynthesis and mitochondrial respiratory chain function. Vishal subsequently joined Dr. Vamsi Mootha’s lab at Harvard Medical School where he employed genomic approaches to understand the function and formation of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. During his postdoctoral training, he developed a “nutrient-sensitized” screening approach to understand mitochondrial function as well as a genomic strategy to functionally annotate mitochondrial proteins. Vishal’s work has been recognized with numerous awards including the Chairman’s Prize from the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation and the Martin Research Prize for Excellence in Basic Research from Massachusetts General Hospital.
